New Sweden Mutual Insurance Company was established on March 28, 1882 in New Sweden Township in Nicollet County Minnesota by area farmers who saw a need for proper insurance coverage. The company’s original St. Peter office moved to the home of each succeeding manager until December 1983 when a permanent headquarters was established in a newly built office building in the city of Nicollet. The Company initially wrote policies in 10 of Nicollet County’s 13 townships, with the remaining 3 added later. Over the years, our coverage area has grown to include 19 counties and the cities of Mankato and Owatonna. We write all the Township mutual (67A) perils except flood. Homeowners policies comprise just over half of our policies in force. In the past several years, we have grown over 100+ policies per year and now have over 2600 policies in force.
The Company has had only six manager/secretaries since 1922 –Ole Peterson (1922), Theodore Ostrom (1938), Harvey Ostrom (1941), Kenneth Becker (1968), Dwayne Pipping (1992) and currently Mark Schaefer (2010).
New Sweden Mutual currently employs a full-time two person staff and has 25 independent agencies writing business.
New Sweden Mutual proudly supports the community and its youth in school, 4-H and FFA. We are also an active supporter of the Nicollet Chamber of Commerce, American Legion and local annual events, including the summertime Friendship Days Celebration.
